On 22 May 2026, the German Ethics Council welcomed a delegation from the National Advisory Commission on Biomedical Ethics (NCE) as well as the Head of the Office of the Bioethics Commission at the Austrian Federal Chancellery to this year’s DACH meeting of the ethics councils in Berlin. No members of the Austrian Commission were present; their appointment has been overdue for more than a year.

The councils presented their current work topics to one another, followed by in-depth discussions on two projects. For this, Ralf Jox from the National Ethics Commission in the Field of Human Medicine provided insights into his work on neurotechnology, with a focus on mental privacy. Council member Aldo Faisal outlined the current status of the German Ethics Council’s Opinion on neurotechnology. In the afternoon, Tanja Krones presented to her colleagues the NEK’s statement published the day before the meeting on the topic of “Coercion and violence during childbirth – ethical and legal considerations.”

The three ethics committees have been exchanging views annually since 2013; the last meeting took place in Vienna.
