Collecting general information (log files)

For technical reasons, every time a user accesses the German Ethics Council website, and every time a file is retrieved, data generated by these actions is temporarily stored and processed in a log file:

  • the IP address (this is anonymised immediately after access),
  • date and time,
  • page accessed/name of the retrieved file,
  • amount of data transferred,
  • notification regarding whether the access/retrieval was successful.

This data is collected to serve the obligatory protection of the network against attacks, to improve our services and to generate usage statistics. The data is stored for a week.

The legal basis for data processing is Article 6 (1) sentence 1 lit. b General Data Protection Regulation (Requirement to safeguard legitimate interests).

Data security

We would like to point out that data transmission on the internet is always potentially subject to security gaps. An absolute protection of data from access by third parties is thus not technically possible. Nonetheless, we do our utmost to protect your data. This site uses SSL encryption to protect the transmission of sensitive content (such as data you provide in online forms). You can recognise an encrypted connection when your browser’s address line changes from "http: //" to "https: //" and the lock symbol appears in your browser line. If SSL encryption is enabled, the data you submit to us cannot be read or modified by third parties during transmission.

Cookies

When individual pages are accessed, so-called temporary cookies are used to facilitate navigation. These session cookies contain no personal information and expire after the session has ended.

Links to other websites

The German Ethics Council website contains links to other websites. The German Ethics Council is not responsible for the content of these other websites or for their compliance with data protection regulations.

Usage analysis

This website uses Matomo (formerly Piwik), an open-source software for the statistical analysis of visitor access. Matomo uses so-called cookies, which are text files saved to your computer that enable your website use to be analysed. The information generated by the cookie about your use of this website is stored on a server operated by the German Ethics Council in the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Germany. The IP address is anonymised immediately after processing and prior to its storage.

The purpose of this data collection is to help us improve our services and to generate usage statistics. The legal basis for data processing is Article 6 (1) sentence 1 lit. b GDPR (Requirement to safeguard legitimate interests).

Subscribing to our mailing list

When you register for the use of our mailing list services (invitations to events, notices of current publications such as opinions, ad-hoc recommendations, the newsletter ("Infobrief") or press releases), we will collect the following required data: name, first name and e-mail address. Providing other personal data when registering is voluntary. This data is entered into a separate distribution list. Data is stored until the revocation/cancellation of your subscription. You may revoke your consent to the processing of your personal data at any time. We will also use your e-mail address to inform you of circumstances relevant to the service or subscription (such as changes to our services or technical conditions).

For an effective registration we need a valid e-mail address. In order to ensure that registration is being requested by the owner of the e-mail address, we employ the "double opt-in" procedure, whereby we record the subscription request, the dispatch of a confirmation mail and the receipt of the requested reply. The data is retained until you unsubscribe from the services; after that it will be deleted immediately.

If you are registered with us, you can access content and services that we offer only to registered users. Registered users also have the option of changing or deleting the data provided during registration at any time. Of course, we will also provide at any time with information regarding the personal data we hold about you. We are happy to rectify or delete this data at your request, to the extent allowed by statutory storage requirements. To contact us in this regard, please use the contact details given at the end of this data protection policy.

Registering for events

When registering for an event, the information you provide (name, first name, and e-mail address) will be used solely for this purpose. We require this data in order to limit the number of participants at an event according to the facilities at hand. We also use your e-mail address to contact you after an event and request your voluntary feedback. Your data will be deleted, at the latest, four weeks after an event. If you ask us before the beginning of an event to delete your stored data, you will no longer be able to participate in the event.

If you use the contact form to submit an inquiry, we will assume that you consent to the storage of the information provided. This data is stored for the purpose of processing your request and in case of any follow-up questions. The data will be deleted as soon as we have processed your inquiry. You may revoke your consent to the processing of your personal data at any time.
