Press Release 12/2011 The German Ethics Council holds a Parliamentary Evening in Berlin

Yesterday (Wednesday), the German Ethics Council invited the members of the German Bundestag to Berlin for the second of this year’s Parliamentary Evenings, to introduce its latest Opinion, Human–animal mixtures in research, and to discuss with the deputies the subjects currently on the Council’s agenda, Intersexuality and Dementia and self-determination.

Press Release 10/2011 Ethics Council discusses the current status of research on medicines in children

At a meeting in its Bioethics Forum series in Berlin on Wednesday evening, the German Ethics Council held a discussion with experts from the fields of medicine and ethics on the ethical aspects of research on medicines in children, at which both the ethical necessity of such research and potential ethical concerns were addressed.

Is it acceptable for children who are born intersexed to be given genital corrective surgery? Many intersex persons who are now adults express regret for the consequences of such operations, which are traumatic for them and are usually irreversible, and call for them to be banned. During the public hearing of the German Ethics Council on 8 June 2011 in Berlin, ethical, medical, legal, psychological and social questions in connection with intersexuality were the subject of a lively and heated discussion.
