German National Ethics Council begins its second term

The reappointed German National Ethics Council was welcomed by the Federal Chancellor, Gerhard Schröder, who also took part in its first discussion, on future topics for its deliberations.

This was followed by the election of the new Executive of the National Ethics Council. The present Chair, Professor Dr. Spiros Simitis, indicated that he was not standing for re-election. Professor Dr. Regine Kollek, one of the current Deputy Chairs, also stated her intention to stand down.

The following were elected to the Executive: Kristiane Weber-Hassemer, former Permanent Secretary of Justice in the State of Hesse (Chair), and Professors Eberhard Schockenhoff and Jens Reich (Deputy Chairs).

The meeting was also attended by the two newly appointed members, the Auxiliary Bishop of Augsburg DDr. Anton Losinger (replacing the retiring Bishop of the Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart, Dr. Gebhard Fürst) and the former Federal Minister of Justice Dr. Jürgen Schmude (replacing the former Federal Minister of Justice Dr. Hans-Jochen Vogel, who is also retiring).
