Press release 03/2002 28 November 2002
Prompted by media reports of the forthcoming birth of a cloned baby, the German National Ethics Council makes the following declaration
For ethical and constitutional reasons the German National Ethics Council unanimously rejects the reproductive cloning of human beings.
It takes this view regardless of whether such cloning is a serious scientific project and irrespective of its technical feasibility.
Together with its French counterpart, the German National Ethics Council urges the imposition of a worldwide ban on the reproductive cloning of human beings and regrets that such a ban is not yet in place. To this end the two ethics councils have embarked on discussions with the National Bioethics Advisory Commission appointed by the President of the United States.
